From the creators of Music Problems:

Have a musical question? Want advice on how play an instrument, or you just want to talk music? You've come to the right place! We specialize in the world of the orch dorks, choirs nerds, band geeks, and the general music nerds.

This blog is maintained by multiple different mods from different areas of music. We specialize in various different instruments and different sorts of ensembles.

So, bring us your questions or discussions. We'll do our best to answer them! (Although, I can't guarantee we have answers to everything.)

We may not answer your question right away. (After all, we don't spend every waking hour online) So be patient with us. Also, make sure you check in after we answer your question. If more than one Mod has an answer for you, we usually just edit the post and add to it.

This is place for discussions, NOT ARGUMENTS. We ask that our followers be respectful to one another. Any rude or disrepectful comments we may receive in the ask box will be ignored and deleted.

We mods may not know everything! And our advice should be followed at your own risk! We welcome multiple opinions and input from our followers! So if you have something to add, feel free to leave a message!

Hi there! So I play Double Bass and I have an audition for my school’s Chamber Orchestra next week (I’m currently in String Orchestra, least experienced string orchestra from our 3 orchestras). Well, the conductor for Chamber Orchestra gave me a piece that I can practice and play for the audition if I wanted, but I kind of want something that’s a bit more challenging. Can you suggest me some pieces? I attached the piece he gave me along with this submission, it was pretty easy, took me about 2 days to play it well. I’m mostly comfortable with the keys of C, D, G, and A major (I would say I’ll take any scale but I only have a full week to prepare). Thanks! (Can you send me a private ask in reply, please? Thank you!)

theperksofbeingattractive asked: Also on clarinet barrels, it really depends on what you need. 66m (almost every standard clarinet barrel) is fine, but depending on tuning you might need 65/67. They also change your tone. It really depends on your tuning and what you want to sound like.

theperksofbeingattractive asked: One kid asked about using multiple reed cases for clarinet reeds - yes do it absolutely. It's easy to keep track of all the reeds and prevents warping.

converseandclarinets asked: What do you think of clarinet barrels not sold with the clarinet? Is there any advantage to having one, and if so, what should I get?

converseandclarinets asked: What do the single-reed players here (particularly clarinetists) think of reed cases that hold 8 or so reeds at once? I'm just using individuals cases. Is that good enough or is there an advantage to using a big case?

converseandclarinets asked: I'm playing "Russian Sailor's Dance" (1st clarinet part) and I'm really struggling with the staccato articulation and the sets of sixteenth notes. Tips?

Anonymous asked: I would like to add to that previous ask. Music Directors/Music Teachers should always create a healthy and friendly relationship with their students. Teachers that come in trying to be intimidating usually end up giving a bad experience to the young musicians, positive energy is definitely essential in playing music. Every musician is much more relaxed which creates much better music. (Although, there should still be a balance with discipline.)

Anonymous asked: I know this is a bit off topic but not sure where else to go. At my high school our band directors treat their students very poorly. We spend time every day, usually 10 to 15 minutes, getting screamed at during class for what one person does. They are angry at the percussionists and chew them out in front of the band, and called them "monkies" the other day. I mean do other programs have this happening as well? Should I do something about it?

I don’t come on here too often, but I feel compelled to answer this question.  The actions of your director are completely unacceptable and the antithesis of what a music educator should be for their students.  You need to speak with the music coordinator/ a guidance counselor/ principle.  Someone with authority.  That is an issue that should be immediately addressed.  There’s strength in numbers, so get some friends to join you if you wish.  And don’t be afraid to come back here and keep us updated.  But I definitely believe you should bring this to the attention of the superiors.
